the first time i’m posting content not of my own

I’m jealous of both his attitude, and the technology available to him.

years later, still awesome.

mechanical engineering, laser cutters, oh my

So my first goal at Ohio State University seems to be quite the challenging one.  Not only must I engineer, design, and create multiple custom parts for a mechanism, I must have it completed in the span of one month.  Here is a sample of the design thus far.

First mobile update

Success! Expect some interesting stuff. Lots of photo updates.

No excuse.

Quite a bit has happened since February. I received a very gracious offer to attend Northwestern’s Art & Theory program & the Maryland Institute College of Art’s Electronic Media program but was ultimately swayed to Ohio State University’s Art & Technology program. I could not resist the lure of being immersed into a group of individuals with whom I could create grand experiments with. And I hope such is the case.

I can’t wait to play with the 3-D printers and various new toys.

Also, wedding planning and design has taken up a massive amount of time. See Cake and Fireworks! for details.

My project engine for my car is taking off finally, I am actually taking it to the machine shop to have the block hot-tanked and measured so that my new parts can be ordered. I’m just hoping it will actually turn over.

This time, I definitely promise to update more often. If only I had a Mac, I could write an app to let me update WordPress remotely. Actually, I never checked. Surely, there is one in the app store. You’ll know if you see a mobile update in a few minutes.

Photos as promised, plus some prospecting gear.

WHAT.

New equipment & plane tickets.

I head to Chicago in about a week for a gradschool interview with Northwestern’s Art & Theory department, and didn’t realize until I was called today about an interview time that it is still winter in parts of the country.  Poor Todd told me it was about 35 degrees outside and I could hear the envy in his voice when I told him I was wearing a t-shirt and had just come inside because I was sweating a bit.  Had I not have been told, I probably would have flown up without a jacket.

In other news, I picked up quite the bounty from the Museum of Fine Arts today, a revamp in the security equipment caused the previous devices to be donated, and they were very open to me taking what I wanted.

The equipment filling my ship’s hold [backseat]:

[7] Phillips Time Lapse Video Recorders

[4] AV 16 channel multiplexers with mounts for a video bay

[1] 7-channel video switch

They had several monitors, but I just don’t have the room as much as I would have liked to have taken them all.

Pictures to come as soon as I unload everything.

Synth Fame

Experimental Television Center – Doepfer Vocoder Synthesis from Nick Bontrager on Vimeo.

I just found out that this was linked on a couple of synth-blogs just after it was uploaded, I wondered where the 400 views came from all of a sudden.

8 months? wow.

So I just got back from New York.

Spent a week in residency at the Experimental TV Center.  A few videos are on Vimeo, more to come once I offload my cameras and capture some tapes.

I’m engaged, and couldn’t be happier.

A couple of group shows since my last update, and a couple more in the following months.

Sketches of some upcoming projects and works in progress to be uploaded as soon as possible.

LET THERE BE LIGHT

I made some huge progress on my “Mammalian Tracking With Audio Trigger Integration” project in the last 24 hours.

I have working code that will successfully track the mammals, and apply their movements to an unspecified (as of right now) action.

That action?  MIDI controller.  Get ready for the symphony.

i want to make art with fireflies

Working on some new installations, I started playing with openFrameworks and Dev-C++ to get the setup I would need.

Teaching yourself c++?  why not.  It has made the possibility very real for integrating infrared detection with realtime video.  In doing so, I could map fireflies to an installation, making it dependent on their patterns.

This week is going to be mostly spent documenting all the work I’ve done in the last 4 months.

I haven’t slept, and I’m due in 2 hours to teach 9th grade Chemistry.
